Choosing the best Bora Bora jet ski tour

The jet ski tours on Bora Bora follow a guide around the inside of the lagoon. The real choice is how long you ride, who sits on which ski, and what fills the rest of the day.

You cannot rent a jet ski on Bora Bora and head off alone unless you hold a coastal boat licence. What you can do is join a guided convoy. French Polynesia's maritime authority allows that without a licence, as long as the company and the route are approved. That is why the tours here look alike from a distance: a short line of jet skis behind a guide, a loop of the lagoon, a stop on a motu and a swim.

The differences sit in the listings. Some sell a place per person and let you pick solo or double. Others sell the whole jet ski for up to two people. Some last two hours, others take six and add lunch, a snorkel boat, an ATV or a 4x4. This guide compares them by what each listing says, with no prices: those change by season and option.

The quick answer

For most people, the two-hour tour around the island is the one to book: pickup, a full loop of the lagoon, two swim stops and a coconut demonstration on a motu, sold per person with solo or double chosen at booking. If two of you share one ski, compare it with the loop booked per jet ski. Want sharks and rays too? Pick the six-hour day with a snorkel safari.

What is the best jet ski tour in Bora Bora?

The best one depends on how you want to spend the day. The two-hour island loop suits most first-timers. The six-hour days suit people who want snorkelling, an ATV or a 4x4 in the same booking.

Six jet ski tours are on this site, run by two Bora Bora operators: Moana Adventure Tours and Bora Bora Activities Center. Each listing caps the group at eight people. The table sets out what each one says about time on the water, how it is sold and what else is in the day.

How long is a jet ski tour in Bora Bora, and is two hours enough?

The classic loop takes two hours, and that includes the stops. For a first ride it is enough: you see the whole lagoon, swim twice and land on a motu.

Read "2 hours" as two hours with the guide, not two hours at full throttle. On the tour around the island the listing says the guide stops at two places to swim, one of them an islet with a coconut husking demonstration. The loop booked per jet ski lists a motu stop, a swim stop and a pause in front of Mount Otemanu. Time on the seat is shorter than the headline figure, and for most people that is a good thing: the stops are where the photos happen.

Riding a jet ski for long stretches is tiring on the arms and back. If you want more time on the water, a six-hour day gives you the same loop plus a second activity, not a longer ride.

Per person or per jet ski: which booking is right for you?

Two people sharing one ski: either works, so compare the totals. One person alone: a per-person booking with the solo option, because a per-ski booking charges you for the whole jet ski.

The Moana Adventure Tours listings sell places per person. On the two-hour tour you choose at booking whether you ride solo or double. The page shows one per-person price, and it does not say whether the solo option costs more, so check the total before you pay.

The Bora Bora Activities Center listings are sold per group of up to two, which in practice means per jet ski. That suits couples. A solo rider pays for the whole ski. The listing does not say whether one booking can mean two skis, so ask if you want to ride separately.

Do you need experience to drive a jet ski on a Bora Bora tour?

No. The tours start with a safety briefing, the guide leads the convoy and sets the pace, and first-time riders take part.

The listing for the two-hour tour describes a safety briefing and a life jacket fitting before you set off. The per-jet-ski loop says it suits all skill levels and lists a briefing, instructions and equipment. Guests agree. One wrote: "Jetskis were easy to operate." Another called it "An amazing experience jetskiing for the first time around such a beautiful island."

What you do need is to follow the guide's line and keep your distance from the ski in front. The rules, the ages and the kit are in the jet ski rules guide.

Which jet ski tour has the best stops?

For culture, the coconut demonstration on a motu. For the classic view, the stop facing Mount Otemanu. For something different, the sand bank on the ATV day.

  • A motu and a coconut: the tour around the island, the shark safari day and the 4x4 day include a coconut husking demonstration, per their listings. One guest on the safari day wrote that "the coconut peeling demonstration was very informative."
  • Mount Otemanu head on: the per-jet-ski loop stops in front of the mountain, with a guide born on the island, and serves water, local juice, tropical fruit and coconut cake.
  • Lunch on a motu: the ATV day rides to a Polynesian barbecue on a motu and stops at a natural sand bank. The snorkel and jet ski day also ends with lunch on a private motu.

Lunch with your feet in the sand: the ATV day rides from the vanilla farm to a barbecue on a motu by jet ski.

Should you book a full day with snorkelling, an ATV or a 4x4?

Yes, if you have one free day and want the lagoon and something else in a single booking. Pick by the second activity: sharks and rays, hill lookouts, or an off-road ride.

The jet ski, lunch and shark safari pairs the two-hour loop with lunch at a restaurant on the main island (the listing names Bloody Mary's, and the venue can change) and a 2.5-hour powerboat snorkel with blacktip reef sharks and rays. The operator may run it the other way round. The 4x4 day starts in an open-sided 4x4 on the mountain roads, with lookouts over Amanahune Bay, Faanui and East Matira and a plantation stop, then lunch and the two-hour jet ski.

The ATV day gives you the wheel on land: about three hours from 9:00 to a crater viewpoint, the WWII guns, two lookouts and a vanilla plantation, then the jet ski from noon. The snorkel and jet ski day is a new listing with three hours of boat snorkelling before the ride. Its listing does not say how long you spend on the jet ski.

How much does a jet ski tour in Bora Bora cost?

It depends on four things: per person or per jet ski, two hours or a full day, whether lunch and a second activity are included, and how you reach the pickup point.

  • Per person or per ski: two people sharing one ski on a per-ski booking split one booking. A solo rider on the same listing pays for the whole ski.
  • Length: a six-hour day with lunch, a boat or an ATV is a larger booking than the two-hour loop.
  • Lunch and drinks: the full days include lunch. The safari listing does not say whether drinks at lunch are included.
  • Getting to the pickup: pickup is on the main island. If your hotel is on a motu, the hotel boat to the main island may be extra.

Compare the total on the booking page with your options selected, not the headline figure. More on budgeting in the travel essentials guide.

What if you would rather not drive a jet ski?

Book a boat. The lagoon safari spends a full day on the water with snorkel stops and a motu picnic, and the shark snorkel takes an afternoon.

The full-day lagoon safari by Bora Bora Experience - Rohivai Tours has no jet ski at all. A safari boat takes you to swim with rays and blacktip reef sharks, to a second spot where manta rays may appear (not guaranteed), to a coral garden and then to a Polynesian picnic on a motu. It suits families with younger children, non-drivers and anyone who wants to look rather than steer. The eco shark and snorkel safari is the short version: 2.5 hours on an afternoon motorboat.

Frequently asked questions

Can children ride on a Bora Bora jet ski tour?

As passengers, yes, from a set age. The Moana Adventure Tours listings ask passengers to be at least 11 and drivers at least 16. The per-jet-ski loop by Bora Bora Activities Center is not suitable for children under 8.

Do jet ski tours pick up from motu hotels?

The jet ski tours pick up on the main island, at hotels or the Vaitape pier. If you stay on a motu, you take the hotel boat across first, and that boat may be extra. The boat-only lagoon safari can collect you by boat if your hotel has sea access.

Is the morning or the afternoon better for a jet ski tour?

Operators say the water tends to be calmer in the morning. Afternoon slots exist too, and on the combination days the jet ski can come before or after lunch.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Operators offer another date or a refund when they cancel for weather. Each listing on this site also allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
